Durham, NC – On Monday, February 12, Zack Hawkins filed officially at the State Board of Elections as a Democratic candidate for NC State Representative, District 31.  Joining Zack was his wife, Tracey, and NC State Rep. Mickey Michaux who recently announced that he would not seek re-election to represent Durham’s District 31.  Also joining Zack was NC State Representatives Mary Ann Black (District 29) and Marcia Morey (District 30), both fully supportive.

At 38, Zack is younger than Rep. Michaux when he was first elected in 1973 to the 31st District and if elected will be the 3rd youngest person ever to win the seat.

Rep. Mickey Michaux said, “Zack is the future and I believe in his ability to fight for our progressive values towards building a better North Carolina for everyone. He will be a great member of the NC General Assembly and will represent Durham County well. He has my full support and endorsement for my seat in the NC House.”

“I am most humbled to receive the endorsements of Mickey Michaux and the Durham House delegation as I seek this seat.  The opportunity to run –to stand on the shoulders of a giant whose legacy of leadership is the reason I have this opportunity is inspiring. Mickey’s progressive body of work frames the fight for justice and equality for the next generation of political leaders.  I look forward to carrying on Mickey’s legacy as a progressive voice in the NC General Assembly, prioritizing K-12 education (including special education), health care access and the economy, innovation, infrastructure and technology, poverty and good government.

I believe in a Better North Carolina. A state where every person has the opportunity to live up to their God-given talents and abilities, from Murphy to Manteo, without discrimination and unnecessary barriers.

Everyone deserves a shot to contribute to our state, receive a well funded and affordable education, access to affordable healthcare, have the opportunity to raise a family with a job that pays a living wage, and have a state government they can trust and that serves their best interest,” Zack Hawkins said after filing as a candidate to represent District 31 in the NC State House.
